Earlier this week and late last month, FDA Commissioner Dr. Scott Gottlieb fielded questions from Senator Marco Rubio and Congressman Kevin Yoder regarding the dire plight of the premium cigar industry. Responding to inquiries in both House and Senate hearings – Dr. Gottlieb acknowledged that he understood the concerns of small businesses and the industry, and that at least portions of the short-sighted and onerous Deeming Rule were being “reconsidered” by FDA leadership.
Mark Pursell, IPCPR CEO sees these recent developments as another example of ongoing industry efforts on Capitol Hill and the industry’s fight for right. “IPCPR applauds Congressman Yoder and Senator Rubio for raising the issue with Dr. Gottlieb and for their continued commitment to small business tobacconists and premium cigar enthusiasts around the country.” Adding “Our retailers and the industry as a whole are fortunate to have leaders in Congress who get what this is all about – saving small businesses and jobs, rolling back over regulation, and most importantly, preventing underage use of tobacco products.”
As Dr. Gottlieb continues to fulfill his new role, IPCPR remains encouraged by statements made by the Commissioner since his confirmation as well as his opinions expressed in past editorials. We look forward to working with him and new leadership at the FDA as well as supporters in Congress to find a solution that removes the yolk of the burdensome and ineffective regulations.
