Reality check—success does not come easily in the premium cigar industry. Thousands of new releases hit the market each year while retail shelf space remains limited. At the same time, the avenues available to promote premium cigar brands continue to shrink as companies like Meta tighten restrictions around tobacco-related content. Then there’s the ongoing challenge of simply getting—and keeping—the attention of consumers in an increasingly crowded marketplace.

For retailers, it creates a difficult balancing act. Which brands deserve precious humidor space? Which companies are building for the long term rather than chasing short-term hype?

Those questions are exactly where ADVentura Cigars has managed to separate itself from other premium cigar brands currently in the industry.

At a time when some brands are constantly introducing new releases and limited editions, ADVentura has taken a slower, more deliberate approach centered on consistency, storytelling, retailer relationships and long-term trust. Rather than trying to overwhelm retailers with endless SKUs and attention-grabbing launches, the company has focused on something increasingly uncommon in today’s premium cigar market: patience.

In an industry often driven by novelty, ADVentura’s “boutique by intention” philosophy has helped the company steadily grow its presence while earning the attention of retailers looking for dependable partners, not just another brand chasing the next trend.

Building a Brand with Long-Term Vision
The ADVentura Cigars brand has its roots in retail. Co-founders Marcel Knobel, a retailer from Switzerland, and Henderson Ventura, a cigarmaker from the Dominican Republic, first envisioned the ADVentura brand as a unique house blend. In the beginning, each ADVentura blend was meant to educate Knobel’s customers on different tobacco varieties. Long before hitting the shores of the U.S., ADVentura established itself as an international brand.

“I founded the brand back in 2016 as a house blend for my retail stores and it just so happened that a lot of people liked the blends. While it was never my intention, I decided to try it out in the Swiss market,” Marcel shares. “After Switzerland, along came Germany. Then it [ADVentura] got bigger and bigger.”

As the brand grew from a house blend into something much larger, Knobel and the blend’s producer, Henderson Ventura, officially became business partners and began laying the foundation for ADVentura’s expansion beyond Europe.

“I liked the concept of what he was creating, and I asked to be his coach,” Henderson says. “We started at a time in the industry that was very tough for boutiques. Because of the FDA, we focused more on the European market at the start. When things got a little better, we introduced the brand in the U.S.”

Part of ADVentura’s appeal is its distinctive branding. Where many premium cigar brands use family heritage as a backstory, ADVentura ditches the expected and goes for something memorable and quite different: pirates. High seas adventure, pirates and nautical lore combine with Henderson Ventura’s blending style to create a cigar experience consumers are more likely to remember.

The first cigar in ADVentura’s portfolio is The Explorer, a cigar with a Mexican wrapper and a spicy, nutty and slightly leathery aroma. Other cigars in its portfolio continue the nautical theme with names such as The Navigator, The Conqueror and The Royal Return.

The second chapter continues this story with Barbarroja’s Invasion, Blue Eyed Jack’s Revenge, and La Llorona. At this year’s trade show, ADVentura officially launched Blackfin’s Parlay, the final release in its pirate series. The cigar features an Ecuadorian wrapper with Dominican binder and filler tobaccos. Originally released as part of a sampler pack in 2025, the standalone version is described story-wise as the peace—or parlay—between the warring pirates of Barbarroja’s Invasion and Blue Eyed Jack’s Revenge.

While the branding may initially capture attention, the company’s long-term strategy extends far beyond pirate lore and nautical storytelling.

The company has taken a deliberate, careful approach when building out its portfolio and scaling its business. Instead of chasing quick success, ADVentura has focused on controlling the quality of its product. When a fire at Tabacalera William Ventura impacted the company’s production in 2022, Knobel and Ventura made the decision to open their own factory dedicated entirely to ADVentura cigars.

Tabacalera Mina del Rey opened in late 2023 and has enabled the brand to increase yearly production while maintaining overall quality and strengthening customer trust in its product.

Consistency Over Hype
The team at ADVentura wants to earn customer loyalty through reliable quality, not novelty. Besides having its own factory to help maintain quality and meet market demand, ADVentura strives to ensure whichever cigar a consumer chooses is one that exceeds expectations.

“The goal with the brand has been that any cigar you smoke from our portfolio can be the perfect cigar,” says Henderson Ventura. “The main focus of the company in the last few years, instead of creating anything new, has been to be very consistent and do things right.”

What does doing things the right way mean to Henderson and those at ADVentura? Before cigars hit store shelves, they are aged for a full year. The tobacco used in the blends also undergoes its own aging process, ranging from four to five years. No stranger to cigar production, Ventura also maintains strict production standards within the factory. Corners are not cut when it comes to making a good cigar, and production is intentionally limited based on the realities of quality control.

“We try to do things in a perfect way,” Ventura remarks. “We are boutique by intention. How we age a cigar for a year, the way we roll the cigar—our main focus is to improve what we have already and maintain quality.”

An important part of ADVentura’s success is its ability to maintain quality and consistency not only in its products, but also in how it operates as a business. Nicole Knobel, wife of Marcel Knobel, joined the company in 2020 during the pandemic. With a background in branding, logistics and marketing, she has become instrumental in helping ADVentura strengthen retailer relationships and position itself differently within the boutique cigar market.

“In any industry, in terms of business, you need three things to be successful: strategy, production and logistics,” Nicole explains. “Each of us represents those strengths and we know what we can lean on each other for to make the perfect combination.”

ADVentura’s business model also intentionally rewards retailer commitment. The company operates an Elite Account program, an exclusive high-tier partnership that rewards top retail accounts with access to limited-production cigars such as La Llorona. The program allows ADVentura to strengthen retail partnerships without relying on aggressive discounting or purchasing shelf space outright.

“How do we compete with the big guys for shelf space? Because we know we can’t buy shelf space and we don’t do deep discounting,” Nicole says. “Those who really support us, we support them with exclusivity.”

For retailers, that exclusivity creates additional value while helping build stronger long-term partnerships between brand and tobacconist.

In a market increasingly driven by constant releases and short attention spans, brands like ADVentura that prioritize consistency, retailer relationships and long-term trust may ultimately be the ones that last.

That philosophy is reflected not only in the cigars themselves, but also in how the company approaches growth. ADVentura has resisted the temptation to rapidly expand its portfolio or chase every industry trend. Instead, the company has focused on refining production, strengthening retailer partnerships, and creating a brand identity consumers can immediately recognize in a crowded humidor.

For retailers, that consistency matters. In an industry where new brands and releases arrive almost daily, dependable companies that understand the realities of shelf space, customer loyalty and long-term sell-through become increasingly valuable partners.

“We are boutique by intention,” Ventura says.

In many ways, that simple phrase may best define why ADVentura continues to gain momentum. The company is not trying to become the loudest voice in the humidor. It is trying to become one retailers and consumers continue to trust year after year.
