Georgia Retailers and Consumers: Oppose SB 520
Georgia lawmakers are considering SB 520, a harmful tax increase that would raise the state tax on cigars from 23 percent to 28 percent and permanently tie that tax to inflation. This proposal does not just increase taxes once. It builds in automatic, recurring increases year after year.
For premium cigar retailers and consumers across Georgia, this bill represents a direct threat to small businesses, brick and mortar tobacconists, and adult consumers who choose to enjoy a legal product.
Georgia’s premium cigar retailers are local small businesses. They provide jobs, generate sales tax revenue, and serve as community gathering places. Unlike mass market tobacco products, premium cigars are handmade, traditionally produced, and enjoyed occasionally by adult consumers.
Increasing taxes and tying them to inflation will not solve budget challenges it will only serve to hurt Georgia businesses while failing to deliver reliable revenue growth.
We must stop SB 520 before it gains momentum.
Take action today. Fill out your information and send a message to your state legislators urging them to oppose SB 520 and protect Georgia small businesses and adult consumers.
