Iowa lawmakers are considering SF2051, a bill that would eliminate smoking in Iowa casinos.
Casinos are adult-only environments. Patrons choose to enter them knowing they involve legal adult activities such as gaming and alcohol. Smoking is also a legal adult choice, and for many customers it is part of the casino experience.
SF2051 does not protect youth or regulate public spaces. It restricts adult behavior in a privately owned, controlled, age-restricted setting. These types of policies do not stop smoking. They push consumers elsewhere and reduce in-state economic activity.
For retail tobacconists and other nearby small businesses, fewer casino visitors means fewer customers, lost revenue, and fewer jobs.
Adult consumers should always be trusted to make legal choices in adult-only venues.
