The National Institute of Technical and Vocational Training (INFOTEP), in partnership with the Association of Dominican Cigar Manufacturers (Procigar), has officially inaugurated the Procigar–INFOTEP School of Tobacco Artisans in Tamboril, Santiago. The initiative is intended to support workforce development and the long-term sustainability of the Dominican premium cigar industry.
According to the organizations, the school was established to address the need for structured training of new tobacco artisans under internationally recognized standards. The program’s initial phase includes four groups focused on premium cigar manufacturing, serving a total of 88 participants. Each group will complete 135 hours of hands-on technical training covering all stages of cigar production.
Training areas include tobacco leaf selection and processing, stemming, humidification, blending, bunching, pressing, wrapper application, finishing techniques, and quality control. In addition to technical instruction, the curriculum incorporates education on tobacco culture and its role in the Dominican economy, along with a values-based framework emphasizing professional conduct.

Procigar President Litto Gómez stated that the creation of the school is tied to preserving craftsmanship and continuity within the industry. He also noted that graduates will have access to employment opportunities within the Dominican tobacco sector.
The school is structured to accommodate 24 students per course and offers flexible scheduling options. Classes are held Monday through Friday in morning, afternoon, and evening sessions, as well as Saturdays.
INFOTEP Deputy Director General Maira Morla highlighted the initiative’s role in strengthening human capital and supporting local economic development. Municipal and national authorities described the project as an example of public-private collaboration.
Procigar and INFOTEP stated that the school reflects their shared commitment to workforce training, social development, and maintaining the Dominican Republic’s role in the global premium cigar industry.
