Marvin R. Shanken, founder, editor and publisher of Cigar Aficionado, died October 29 at age 83, the magazine reported.

Shanken launched Cigar Aficionado in 1992, helping introduce handmade cigars to a wider audience. For premium cigar retailers, his legacy includes greater recognition of the craftsmanship, culture and people behind the products on their shelves.

His publishing career began with the purchase of Impact in 1972. He acquired Wine Spectator in 1979 and built a company connecting readers with wine, spirits and cigars. He also established the Big Smoke, bringing cigar enthusiasts and manufacturers together.

His philanthropy supported scholarships, prostate cancer research and autism services.

Shanken is survived by his wife, Hazel; sisters Elaine and Susan; daughters Samantha Shanken Baker, Allison Cohen and Jessica Shanken Reid; and four grandchildren.

His passing marks the loss of an influential voice whose enthusiasm helped shape the modern premium cigar industry.
